This seems like an illustration of Nature versus Nurture. Two people make a kid: Nature shuffles their genes, and comes up with something different. The parents raise the kid to behave a certain way: Nurture may give them what they want. Or it may tell the kid to throw away the cards the parents dealt him, and play the game with a fresh deck.
