This is a fine bit of writing, John. How refreshing for a poet to apply their wordcraft to a distinguished warship. Those Gearing-class vessels were tough little tin cans. I know a guy who sailed in one as part of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club. (He was a second class in fire control.) Like the Warrington, his was Bath-built. I served eight miles from Bath from ‘76 to ‘78, at Brunswick Naval Air Station. Used to run into BIW shipfitters in Bath bars. They took great pride in their handiwork. (And got me to pick up the tab for four rounds while they recollected about the ships they’d built.)
