The rivalry between 4-H and FFA is very serious in Up North Michigan. Or rather, between the kids’ parents. There they’ll be: parents amiably chatting during a corn judging event at a county fair. A mom will declare that chemical fertilizer is the surest way to grow it as high as an elephant’s eye by the 4th of July. Another mom will say no, the best fertilizer now is what it’s always been: manure. Next thing you know, they’re flippin’ over judging tables and tossing aside chairs to give themselves fightin’ room.
