I felt compelled to drop this item into the article because of the daycare situation in Michigan, where I live. The state's population has been eroding for years. So the legislature established a $2,000 annual tax credit per kid. Parents have expressed their thanks. But they've also observed that $2,000 doesn't incent two working parents to have a kid. The average annual cost of daycare in this state is $10,000. That tax credit would cover just 2 1/2 months of daycare, so one parent would have to quit their job, and stay home with the kid during the remainder of the year. That's a big financial hit for working parents around here.
