As a Navy veteran, I know that one needn’t put on a uniform to render valuable service. And another observation from someone who served immediately after Nam (it ended 18 months before I took the oath in ‘74) as a naval air traffic controller. My petty officers had been there, and they shared what they’d learned. They regarded the pilots who flew missions over Nam as heroes. But they regarded those who were lost as lives wasted on a war we shouldn’t have fought, and knew early on we couldn’t win. Based on their observations, Robert, the world is better off for your having served in the Peace Corps than it possibly could have been if you’d stayed in uniform. Just sayin’.
